PageRank (PR) is the term used by Google to gauge / calculate the popularity and importance of a website. PageRank is created by Larry Page when he was a student at Standford University and was patented by Standford University.

The PageRank Number for a website is determined based on the quantity and quality of links to this website and based on the probability value on Google’s link analysis algorithm. PageRank is measure on a scale of one to ten (1-10). The formulas created by Google to determine PageRank is undisclosed to the public.

PageRank will be the factor that decide on the ranking of each web page in Google Search Engine. The Search Engine will typically display the web pages that contain keyword / keywords that match the user’s search.

The best way to increase the PageRank of your website is to have Backlink / Backward link to your website pages from other websites. Each Backlink to your website has different values; having Backlink / Backward link from websites with higher PageRank will provide greater value to your website. Not only that, a website that has relevant content that link to your website will also provide greater value.Though some websites may possess a high PageRank value, but if they contain many Backlinks then the point or value to those Backlinks will be shared.

Other than Backlink / Backward link, Site Speed is also another factor that determines PageRank.  How fast Google's can crawl and access the website will affect its PageRank. Google’s rewards ‘bonuses’ for websites that can be accessed quickly.

Another way to improve PageRank for your website is to have a quality and useful content on your website. By having quality content in your website will increase your chances of getting Backlinks / Backward links from other websites and indirectly increase your PageRank.
